Braving the Waves at Night to Rescue a Critically Injured Fisherman off Da Nang

12/02/2025

At 6:00 PM on February 11, 2025, while operating at sea at coordinates 17° 09' N latitude and 108° 06' E longitude (approximately 65 nautical miles northeast of Son Tra Cape, Da Nang), the captain of the fishing vessel QNg 94397 TS made an urgent distress call to the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (VMRCC). He reported that a crew member, Mr. Nguyen Binh Tai (born in 1966), had suffered a severe occupational accident resulting in the complete amputation of his right foot. The injury caused massive blood loss and led to unconsciousness. The captain urgently requested immediate rescue assistance.

Upon receiving the distress signal, VMRCC promptly coordinated with the Danang Radio to establish contact, allowing medical personnel to provide initial first-aid instructions via radio. Simultaneously, the fishing vessel was instructed to alter its course towards Da Nang to minimize the response time for rescue forces.

Under the directive of VINASARCOM, the Ministry of Transport, and the Vietnam Maritime Administration, VMRCC immediately deployed the dedicated search and rescue vessel SAR 274, which was on standby at the nearest location in Da Nang. Two doctors from the Da Nang 115 Emergency Center accompanied the vessel to provide emergency medical assistance.

Despite navigating rough seas and strong northeastern monsoon winds, SAR 274 reached the fishing vessel QNg 94397 TS at 11:15 PM on February 11, 2025, at coordinates 15° 32' N latitude and 111° 40' E longitude. The rescue team and medical personnel boarded the fishing vessel to administer emergency treatment before transferring the injured fisherman onto SAR 274. The vessel then returned to Da Nang at full speed for further medical intervention.

At 3:00 AM on February 12, 2025, SAR 274 safely docked at the pier in Da Nang, completing the emergency evacuation. The injured fisherman was immediately transferred to a hospital in Da Nang for continued treatment. Thanks to the timely and professional rescue efforts, his life was no longer in danger.
