11/05/2023

On May 10, 2023, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center had the honor of welcoming Mr. Kitack Lim, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and his delegation for a visit to our unit in Da Nang.

The delegation was received by Mr. Nguyễn Văn Tính, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and Mr. Bùi Tân Nguyên, Director of the Danang Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center.

During the meeting, Deputy General Director Nguyễn Văn Tính expressed his honor in welcoming the Secretary-General. He provided a brief overview of Vietnam’s maritime search and rescue force and highlighted the achievements attained in recent years. He also discussed the challenges and limitations the force faces, suggesting that the IMO could support Vietnam by offering training for personnel in maritime search and rescue coordination, as well as assistance in applying science and technology to these operations.

Secretary-General Kitack Lim highly commended the Center's activities and emphasized the crucial role of the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center in assisting seafarers, passengers, and citizens at sea. He pointed out the significance of their work, particularly in the busy international shipping lanes of the South China Sea, one of the busiest maritime routes globally with dense traffic.

In response to the Center’s proposals, Secretary-General Lim expressed his commitment to considering ways the IMO could provide support, including through training courses and projects aimed at enhancing science and technology.

"I am very proud of the efforts made by the Vietnamese search and rescue force. You should be proud of yourselves as well. This way, the global community will remember the challenges and dedication of the Vietnam maritime search and rescue force in saving lives at sea," affirmed IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim./.
