The Secretary General of the IMO visited and encouraged the Vietnam Maritime search and Rescue Coordination Center

On May 10, 2023, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (Vietnam MRCC) was honored to welcome Mr. Kitack Lim, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the delegation to visit and work with the Centre’s affiliated unit in Da Nang.

Participating in welcoming the delegation were Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, Deputy General Director of Vietnam MRCC; Mr. Bui Tan Nguyen, Director of the Danang MRCC.

At the meeting, Deputy General Director Nguyen Van Tinh expressed his honor to welcome the Secretary General and gave a brief introduction about the Vietnam MRCC force and the operation results has been achieved in the recent years. The Deputy General Director also shared about Vietnam MRCC’s difficulties and limitations and proposed that IMO supports Vietnam in training human resources in coordinating technical search and rescue at sea, and supporting the application of science and technology in search and rescue operations at sea.

Highly appreciating Vietnam MRCC’s activities, Secretary-General Kitack Lim affirmed that the role of Vietnam MRCC is very important in supporting people, seafarers and passengers, especially the international maritime route through the East Sea area is one of the busiest sea traffic routes in the world, with a dense density of ships regularly traveling.

In response to Vietnam MRCC's proposal, the Secretary-General completely agreed and will consider ways in which IMO can deploy support for training courses and investment projects to upgrade science and technology.

“I am very proud of what the Vietnamese rescue forces are doing and you must be proud of yourselves, so the global community will remember the efforts, difficulties and dedication of Vietnam MRCC forces in saving human lives at sea" IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim affirmed.
