In the early hours of January 11, 2025, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (Vietnam MRCC) received an urgent distress signal from the M/V Dolphin 18, a Vietnam-flagged vessel. The incident occurred in international waters, far from the coasts of neighboring countries, amid severe weather conditions with winds reaching force 6-7 and waves as high as 4-5 meters.
The Dolphin 18, carrying 18 Vietnamese crew members, sent out a DSC distress signal at 04:30 on January 11. The distress position was located at coordinates 05°25'N, 105°54'E, approximately 182 nautical miles northeast of Kuantan (Malaysia) and 202 nautical miles south-southeast of Cape Ca Mau. Efforts to establish contact with the vessel by Vietnam MRCC were unsuccessful.
The center immediately assessed the situation and launched emergency response measures. As Vietnam’s national focal point for maritime search and rescue, the MRCC directly contacted international search and rescue agencies, including Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore, Indonesia Maritime search and rescue Coordination Center, and Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency. Urgent maritime safety broadcasts were also issued, mobilizing nearby vessels to assist at the incident site.
Thanks to effective coordination among regional agencies, by 06:55 on the same day, the NICOLAI MAERSK (Hong Kong-flagged) located and rescued all 18 crew members adrift on two life rafts. The rescued crew received medical attention, and their health conditions are now stable. The NICOLAI MAERSK continued its journey to Tanjung Pelepas Port, Malaysia, with an estimated arrival time of 06:00 on January 12.
This successful rescue not only underscores the effective coordination capabilities of Vietnam’s maritime search and rescue forces but also highlights the global maritime search and rescue system's commitment to aiding individuals in distress at sea, regardless of nationality. The involved countries fulfilled their responsibilities as maritime nations and active members of international maritime conventions.
The Vietnam MRCC is a humanitarian organization under the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Ministry of Transport. Established in 1996, the center is tasked with leading and coordinating search and rescue efforts across Vietnam's maritime domain. It also serves as the national focal point for international maritime search and rescue cooperation under Vietnamese law and international treaties to which Vietnam is a signatory. Over the years, the center has effectively and creatively applied the "on-site" principle, timely rescuing thousands of people in maritime accidents, asserting the position of Vietnam’s maritime search and rescue system, strengthening international trust, and affirming the sacred sovereignty of the nation's seas and islands.
